It’s a great time to get out to the vineyards…
As the wineries welcome in spring, they also welcome you to their tasting rooms and vineyards, to experience first hand their craft.
May is traditionally the month when most wineries throughout the country dust off their patios, and schedule many unique events. For most small or boutique wineries, Memorial Day weekend may be your only chance to visit their properties.
Wine tasting excursions are easy to plan, with or without the help of a touring company. Most regions that include a dozen or more wineries will have just as many companies that are willing to put together tours for groups large and small. But you can also have a great day wine tasting on your own by picking a starting point and then asking for a recommendation at each new place that you visit. Bring a small picnic lunch and snacks, a designated driver and you are sure to enjoy all that spring wine tasting has to offer!

Halsey Pinot Noir
DePonte Cellars is a family owned and operated winery, set in the heart of Oregon’s Dundee Hills, with a goal to produce elegant wines with finesse and complexity. Their neighbors are some of the most prestigious names in the Oregon wine industry and they produce wines that rival the very best in the country.

The 17-acre vineyard has been meticulously planted by Buddy Beck, the foremost expert in Dundee Hills terroir. Says Buddy, “Vines have grown successfully on this site for over 30 years and we’ve taken the lessons they’ve taught us and applied new farming techniques to match the very best of all worlds – the new and the old, Oregon and Burgundy.”

The Halsey Pinot Noir is an elegant light bodied Pinot; it’s fresh and vibrant with raspberry and cherry flavors along with a classic mushroom earthy characteristic. It shows subtle and fine-grained tannins on the lively juicy finish. Easy to enjoy now, it will age beautifully in the next 4-5 years.

Monte Ferro Chardonnay

After many years in the corporate world living on three continents Bob and Mignon Ervin “retired” to their original home in Oregon in the middle of the Willamette Valley. They launched Monte Ferro in 2009 and are focused on the production of small quantities of well-made cool climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Oregon vineyards and full bodied Syrah from the warmer Columbia River Valley of Washington.

The “steel cut” Chardonnay is whole cluster pressed and then slowly fermented using selected yeast strains in stainless steel with tight temperature control and without malolactic fermentation. The Ervins prefer the crisper expression of this grape allowing the fruit to express its origins in a “Chablis” style. The wine is generally ready for release by May for summertime consumption. It develops softer character and richer flavor over several years.
